14 Days to celebrate

February 1st, 2010

February is here already. And even though it seems we just put away the Christmas decorations at the same time we have started to cut out paper hearts for Valentine’s Day crafts. As we start to plan our Valentine’s Day and all the activities that revolve around this “holiday” we realize we want our little ones to get a better idea of what to celebrate on Valentines Day. We want them to celebrate LOVE, love for all things, love for their family, for their friends, for their teachers and LOVE for the earth. So we invite you to follow your heart for the next 14 days, let your spirits loose and celebrate that magical thing called LOVE.

Imagination

June 18th, 2009

I have two amazing ? little girls, I absolutely LOVE them, I am head over hills for them. As I watch them play, fight, laugh and learn I find myself wondering what do I want to leave them, what can I give them that will always be with them. And after thinking, wondering and lingering on this question,  I have come to the conclusion that the most important thing I can give them is an Imagination big as the universe. I use to think education was number one, and believe me is still very close to the top spot, but without and imagination even education is not enough.
When I say imagination, I mean a thinking ability that can bring you out of the regular square box, and ability to fly far away and come back with solutions and ideas that will help you live happily through life. If you come in any given day to our house you will hear me more than replying to many questions and demands with this simple words –Use your imagination? And as I said it this morning I made a silent promise to my girls, -I will also use my imagination…

A new method of transportation… for me

May 13th, 2009

We live in a small Key, in one plain word it is PARADISE. The weather is perfect most of the time. You can walk wherever you need to go, pediatricians office, school, groceries store, park, pool, beach, friends house…. But sadly with the heat and 2 young girls I find myself using my car more often than I would like. We walk every afternoon to the park, but when I am in a rush (very common) it takes me forever to get to my destination walking or riding bikes with them. So when I saw this Madsen Cycles new bikes, I just couldn’t resist… they are so-so-so very cute, in yummy colors and such a convenient design…. I really would love one!

Reading right now

May 11th, 2009

My daughters love to go to the bookstore, and even though we always end up with a new book (which encourages consumerism, and is not very eco-friendly) I truly love that they enjoy reading as much as I used to… don’t get me wrong I love to read, but basically I have not time now-a-days.
I KNOW you have to walk the talk if you want the talk to happen. So I have decided to get back into reading, which has been a real pleasure. I went on a shopping spree, and this is what is sitting on my nightstand.

Mother’s Day Realization

May 10th, 2009

So today is mothers day. And I have had a FABULOUS, relaxing, somewhat peaceful (my daughters still have fought all day! even though I asked and begged, just for today -no fighting) Mother’s day.  And with all this time (my hubby has been great maintaining the girls entertained) I have been thinking about mothers and motherhood, and I have come to the conclusion that moms are a bit like God. We create this small beings, and we can mold them and guide them as much as we want. In a small way we create life inside of us (I know God plays a much bigger role, and I am not comparing my self to God in any way), but I do believe I have the power to mold my daughters, and get them exposed to as little or as much as I want. And I have chosen to let them experience all things possible (while they are age appropriate and safe) and give them a good taste of what the world is. So in a certain way this Mother’s day I have bowed to create and mold amazing human beings, that will grow and succeed, making all their dreams their existential truth. My mom was and still is the biggest standpole in my life, she keeps me grounded and challenges me to my ultimate limits. She has given me wings to fly high and a nice nest where I can always come back. She has never doubted me, and this has giving me the strength to get where I am now. So today I understand more than ever the power she had on me, and the power I have on my girls.
Happy Mother’s day to all, keep dreaming, breathing, and exposing your little ones to all the wonders of this world. So someday they can look back and realize how blessed they have been to have had a mom who believed in this marvelous world.

Important facts on Organic Cotton and Ethics

April 7th, 2009

Organic Cotton
Distressingly, it takes 1/3 lb. of pesticides and fertilizers to grow enough cotton for just one t-shirt and routinely 14 million Americans are consuming water contaminated with pesticides from traditional agricultural farming techniques.
Growing conventional cotton utilizes 25% of the world’s yearly insecticides and more than 10% of pesticides 744 gallons of water. As with many chemicals, pesticides where EPA-approved and registered without much research, today many of these chemicals can be linked to cancer and other diseases. A single drop of the pesticide aldicarb (highly used in cotton crops), absorbed through the skin can kill an adult. Aldicarb is commonly used in cotton production and in 2003 almost 1 million kilos was applied to cotton grown in the USA. Aldicarb is also applied to cotton in 25 other countries worldwide.
Many of this conventional cotton crops hire children as young as 7 years old to pick up the crop and are paid less than $7 a month.
Most of the cotton fabrics are with formaldehyde to reduce wrinkles and bleached with chlorine producing dioxin, a known carcinogen. It is also colored using chemical dyes that contained toxic heavy metals including chrome, copper and zinc. And sadly all this chemicals end up in our waterways, our food, our homes and most importantly our bodies.

Quite the opposite, organic cotton is grown without the use of any harmful chemicals or pesticides. Using techniques and rudiments that have minimum impact on the environment and its inhabitants. Organic crops not only limit their impact and pollution, but also replenish and maintain soil fertility, in the mean time biologically diversity and healthy ecosystem are built for all to enjoy.

Design Ethics
The designs included in the MamaOm Collections mix comfort and functionality without forgetting fashion. Each collection has in mind the needs of childhood and motherhood. For mothers time is a luxury, and they don’t want to spend much time on their looks, for children looking good is not a priority; we provide our clients with pieces that will make them feel and look excellent, without having to take too much time to achieve it.

Trans-seasonal clothing
As global warming becomes more of a reality and less of a book theory, seasons become more unpredictable. In response MamaOm has created collections that can be called season-less, with year round coloring, and possibilities of wearing them at the moment or layering for colder days.
MamaOm is very careful of the fabrics being used, and is aware of the importance of having pieces that can be worn year round. In response

Keep trees growing
MamaOm is proud to offer only recycled and tree-free paper goods (including hangtags, business cards, pamphlets). By doing this old forests are preserved, energy is conserved (fossil fuels and purchased energy), green house gases are reduced, landfill space is not used in vain and the volume of polluted wastewater from paper mills is lessen.
Contemplate that recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil, 4,100 kilowatts of energy and 3.2 cubic yards of landfill.
Please visit www.tree-nation.com to learn more about replanting efforts and www.printgreener.com to learn about printing green.
